About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on Product Owner to lead the development of our web-based tax workpapers platform. You will serve as the primary bridge between our tax workpaper stakeholders and a dedicated Agile development team.
This role combines strategic product ownership with day-to-day execution: you will own the product vision and roadmap while also managing the backlog, leading sprints, and ensuring our software accurately reflects complex tax regulations. The ideal candidate is a former tax professional who has pivoted into product management; someone who understands the nuance of tax compliance work papers.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the product vision and strategy for our tax workpaper solutions, with a focus on corporate and partnership tax forms and related schedules.
- Act as the dedicated Product Owner for a development team: supporting daily stand-ups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and sprint reviews.
- Translate high-level tax requirements into detailed user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical tasks that developers can execute.
- Ensure the web-based workpapers accurately calculate and flow data according to tax regulations; serve as the final authority on whether a feature meets compliance standards before release.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including developers, designers, and quality assurance to deliver high-quality tax workpaper products.
- Work directly with internal subject matter experts (CPAs) to interpret new tax laws and convert them into software logic.
- Conduct market research to identify trends, competitor offerings, and opportunities for innovation in the corporate tax workpaper space.
- Analyze user feedback and usage data to inform product decisions and improvements.
- Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) to verify that tax calculations, M-adjustments, and data imports function as a tax professional would expect.
- Stay current with changes in tax laws, regulations, and IRS requirements related tax filings and tax compliance workpapers.
- Conduct product demos and trainings.
- Direct hands-on experience preparing or reviewing tax compliance workpapers. You must understand the lifecycles of corporate and partnership returns, including book-to-tax adjustments (Schedule M-1/M-3) and trial balance data.
- Proven experience acting as a Product Owner or Product Manager in an Agile/Scrum environment, including managing backlogs and writing user stories.
- Deep understanding of tax laws, regulations, and IRS requirements related to tax compliance.
- Technical aptitude: comfort working with web-based software, managing ticket tracking systems (Jira, Azure DevOps), and communicating with engineering teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex tax concepts into user-friendly software features.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax developers and technical constraints to tax professionals.
- Previous experience in tax product management at a software company or within the technology division of a CPA firm.
- Active or inactive CPA license.
- Specific experience with tax workpaper solutions or building custom Excel-based tax models.
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Accounting, or a related field; Master's degree a plus.
- Familiarity with CCH and Thomson Reuters tax software.
